Wombwell Recreation Ground
5 Mile Road Race
Kingstone Runners hosted the 2020 Wombwell 5, a long-established road race in South Yorkshire. After a course check on Saturday, the day before the race, evrything looked fine. Fears of a cancellation were allayed and everyone was informed that the race would go ahead. Unfortunately, storm Dennis tried its best to introduce a fly into the ointment; one end of the go-kart track was flooded.
After some quick thinking and running about measuring alternative routes, the start and finish were moved slightly to avoid turning the Wombwell 5 Road Race into a duathlon.
In the end, all went went well. The weather wasn't too unkind, the St. Johns Ambulance team had a quiet morning, the River Dove which was lapping the underside of the bridge at Low Valley behaved itself and stayed off the road.
Over 300 runners completed the race, with Penistone's Gary Briscoe winning by nearly 2 minutes in front of second place Dean Hanwell. First lady was Kimberworth Strider Lyndsey Eastman with Penistone's Samantha Shaw second. Team prize-winners were Penistone men and Barnsley AC ladies.
Medals were handed out, contents of goody-bags were devoured, prizes were presented and Janette Tomlins, long-standing race organiser and local athletic stalwart was honoured.
